Inherit The Wind- Havvy Ehrich

After analyzing the movie, it is made known that the issue was not necessarily religion vs no religion. It was more so focused on the idea of right to think vs no right to think. Though religion was used as the main focus, the piggybacking  idea here was the ability to choose what one thinks about the situation. This idea of God creating the world vs. evolution has and will continue being a very controversial idea. The movie brings out the fact that even if you may have opposing views, you must follow the crowd. To that point, Mr. Drummond fights for the freedom of thought and “the right to be wrong”. The freedom of thought was the victory for the defense and the keeping of God fearing doctrine was the victory for the other side. Not having those victories meant defeat.

Understanding that politics and religion were heavily involved in this movie, the same can be said for politics today. As mentioned in class, we see a relatively good amount of religion involved in the political choices of this day and age. Though separation of church and state was said to happen, we don’t see it in all political choices. I think that some people assume morality is always religion. We do get our morals from God, but those who chose not to follow Jesus still have human morals. I think that these human morals and religious morals both come together to affect our politics. Conflicting human morals without the implication of God and morals with full implication of God can both be seen in political thought. For example, Roe v Wade was seen as a very religiously political event. There were also people involved who had the same opposing thought, but did not consider God and what the Bible has to say about it. Basically, all morals get involved in politics, but religious ones  seem prominent.  We are given free will to choose if we want to believe that Jesus died for our sins, that is up for us to decide as individuals. This same free will applies to our everyday lives, thoughts, choices, ideas, etc. With that being said, we still have freedom to do what we want no matter what. To bring it back to the point of the prompt, what is at stake today could be the limited ways going about how we fulfill our choices due to political decisions.

Romans 5:8 - But God demonstrates his own love for us in this While we were still sinners Christ died for us.

  1. Interesting points and highlights the conflicts of value systems, especially in a religiously pluralistic society like the US. It is a challenge to respect the right of people to worship and believe as they choose (or not at all), and yet respects those differences when it comes to politics, science, and education.
