Iron Jawed Angels
Hannah Crouser
One of my favorite quotes from the movie Ironed Jawed Angels was when the psychiatrist tasked with delivering Alice with a diagnosis said “courage in women is often mistaken for insanity”. Women are constantly judged for being hysterical when they are only emotional. When a woman speaks her mind she is seen as being bossy whereas a man will be seen as assertive. Women are constantly held to different standards than men, and those standards of how to act get more and more complicated if you are not a White, cisgender woman. In the film, there was only minimal mention of Black women getting the right to vote. Even when Black women got the right to vote, and the same rights as White women, they are still held to a different standard. Black women are expected to always have their emotions in check and to look a certain way. Black women have always been hypersexualized. When a White woman in power embraces her sexuality she may be ridiculed, but it is far less than if she were a Black woman. Even though women are seen as lesser than a man, Black women are seen as lesser than a White woman.
It seems like you are highlighting an intersectional approach - it would be great to see you bring the different themes you've identified together. I also wonder wether the articles we read for this week would help you bring out your points? I like the image - expanding on why you chose it would strengthen your post!
